Once in a while, something happens that forces us to take a step back from the googly eyes and food puns and reflect on our deepest values as a company. This happened most recently when multiple wildfires raged across the North Bay, threatening our neighbor's homes, businesses, and lives. This past week was a dark one, with skies obscured by smoke and ash, and our employees, family, and friends searching for answers about what had happened to their houses and loved ones. Yet amidst the pain and darkness, we found light and hope through food and community.

The moment we heard about the fires, we knew that we had to get involved, so we started by teaming up with our friends at Ugly Juice and Anja Lee Catering to donate hundreds of pounds of produce to a banquet supporting the firefighters in Sonoma. Seeing the power of a nourishing meal to restore and revive a struggling community reminded us of the profound power of food.

We also collaborated with Chef Aaron Little with Assemble to Order Catering to serve dinner to medical volunteers providing assistance to victims of the Tubbs fire. Thanks to a group of rockstar volunteers, as well as Golden State Lumber and Cabrillo Elementary School, we were able to transform our “ugly” produce into 150 beautiful plates of salad, veggie pasta, potatoes, and Imperfect fruit, which brought some much-needed comfort amidst the distress.

Ultimately, the silver lining of these terrible fires was how much they reminded us of the power of giving. Each time we pitched in to help, we got inspired to help more. Our supply and outreach teams were excited to make a difference that after they got off work they rented a truck and personally delivered 2,000 lbs of fruits and veggies to Forestville for a dinner that served doctors, vets, evacuees, and firefighters. It was perhaps the most meaningful box of produce that we've ever delivered.

Our efforts, like the recovery, are ongoing. At every event where we sent food and volunteers, we were awed and humbled by the outpouring of generosity from near and far. We found it inspiring and we encourage each of you to provide your support if you can. One of our favorite things about our community is how we take ideas like generosity, kindness, and openness and put them into action in the world. So let's take this moment to count our blessings and then go out and make a difference, be that through volunteering your time, your resources, or just sharing a home-cooked meal with someone who needs it.
